Washers?
Washers?
(OP)
Bit of a debate at the moment in our office over the use of washers in bolted flange connections.
Can anyone shed some light as to whether washers are required in a bolted flange connection?
Is it a code requirement? A users preference? Does the washer serve some addition purpose when bolting.
Comments appreciated.
Thanks

RE: Washers?
1. They help distribute the load across a larger area of the joint, which improves the stiffness and reduces bolt fatigue.
2. The distributed load also helps to ensure even gasket crush in piping joints.
3. They provide a flat, even surface for the bolt head to react against.
4. They reduce friction against the bolt head, ensuring even and accurate torquing and preloading.
5. They help reduce joint relaxation by preventing deformation to the joint surface.
RE: Washers?
Might want to clarify if you are asking about flat washers or conical washers.
Packdad's answer is spot on for flat washers.
RE: Washers?
Just talking about flat washers on water and diesel pipe installations.
It's not something I'm use to on oil fit-ups, but is a passion of another engineer in our office.
