Thickness selection for MDMT calc. of a clamp

(OP)
Dear colleagues,

Does any of you know where can I get some hints (or examples) concerning how to select "the" thickness of a not regular geometry like the clamp of a quick openning closure.
Any comment on this regard will be very welcome.
Thanks in advance

JJ

RE: Thickness selection for MDMT calc. of a clamp

The answer will depend upon the code and you should review the specific code wording in detail relative to your component.  For Section VIII, for welded components it is generally the thickness of the weld; or, for components that are not welded, the thickness of the part.  There is an exception for flat plates due to the fact they have a bending stress rather than a membrane stress.  For B31.3, it simply specifies nominal thickness, irrespective of welds or not, but it also provides the exception for flat plates.
