Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

I just noticed in SP4 that we can now save to a PDF file. Maybe this was in SP3.1 but I just noticed it. I don't have 3.1 installed anymore or I would test it.

Just and FYI for all of you that need to save as a PDF.

Scott,

I have SP4 but do not have this option.  Do you have Adobe installed on your computer?

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

Hey Scott,

Weird!!  I'm using 2003 SP4.0 and there is no selection "save as PDF" in my Add-Ins.  I have Adobe Acrobat 5.0 installed on my computer, so I have a "send to distiller" selection in my printer window.  I wonder if that has something to do with it being missing in the add-ins.  I do have both "PhotoWorks" and "PhotoWorks Release 2" listed in my add-ins, but if I click on "PhotoWorks" it tells me it cannot load because it is missing a component.  Why is it in the list if it is not there?

I figured this out. Late, but at least I now know why I have this option. Sorry to lead you all astray.

I didn't think that because I installed PR1 that it would have an effect on my other SW versions, but it does. If you DL and install SW04 PR1, you will get this option in all other versions of SW.

Works pretty darn slick too.

Timelord,

The reason you can't pick the orinial PW is because after 3.1 PW became obsolete. It's only in there because of a .dll that is still in the SW directory. You could try removing the lworks.dll and see if that takes it out. You have to restart SW though.

Once you install SW04 at final release you won't have PW anymore.

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

It sounds promising, but I'm still hanging on to my PDF995.  With PDF995, one can generate multi-page PDF's from multiple sourdes.  For instance, I can print my drawing to PDF, and then append a apreadsheet and MS word document.

Still, for day-to-day publishing, it should be great.

Good and evil: wrap them up and disguise it as people.

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

Yeah thats a new functionality of 2004 and I was going to say its probably because you installed Beta1, 2, or PR1 but I see that you have figured that out on your own!  Up until now its been an ala carte item that already works with 2003 Its a nice add-in created by BlueBeam.

TheTick,

I have read (05 Aug 2003 issue of PC Magazine) that PDF995 creates larger than normal PDF files.  Do you find that to be true?  Have you used any other PDF convertors?

Regg

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

I don't know how big a "normal" PDF file is.  I haven't had any complaints.  I recall D-size drawings coming in around 400KB.  I'm not at work today, so I can't check just yet.

I do like the ability to "package" multiple documents by appending to the last document.

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

Y'all,

It works good, except for the part that says "An unknown error occured during the creation of the PDF file". I tried it in SW2003sp4 and SW2004sp3(pr1). Both the same.

I only get the message when trying to save (SaveAs PDF) parts, assemblies, or drawings. All the other files works fine

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

I really dont have a benchmark I have published PDFs using the adobe distiller as my print destination.. but usually they are rather large Instruction manual type documents, and I really havent paid much attention to the size.. sorry

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

We print to PDF Writer for 'D'size sheets regularly.
At 300 dpi, the largest file sizes are about 130-140KB.

RE: Save as a PDF - anyone seen this?

SBaugh,

My temp is clear or empty or whatever.

I assume you are asking me where I got it. If you are, perhaps you are confused because I mistakenly typed SP3 instead of SW2004 Beta 3 (PR1).

Anyway, PDF runs, the progress bar gets to the end and the error pops up. Everytime, in SW2003 or SW2004.
