RE: Multi media filters

Multi media filters come in all sorts of sizes and configurations.  Alone they are not all that good for iron removal unless all the iron exists in the Ferric form.  Even then it is likely that other treatment would be necessary such as pre-coagulation, settling, etc. Any Ferrous iron would need to be converted to the Ferric form for the filter to remove it. Depending upon the amount of water to be treated a Multi media filter can be in a small cartridge form to 10' diameter vessel and larger.  The media can be a cartridge for very small applications or it can be a combination of media such as sand, anthracite and garnet or any combination of 2 of those 3.  The term Multi media simply refers to a filter with 2 or more filtering media within the same vessel. Do an Internet search with your favorite Search Engine, such as Google, for "Multimedia filtration" and you'll get lots of sites to visit for information.

RE: Multi media filters

Anyone have experience with rubber lining of multi-media pressure filters? Filters are to be used for RO pretreatment, with 2 different feed sources: potable water with high SDI and seawater from wells. I am concerned about the thickness of the lining necessary.

RE: Multi media filters

GarySCWSVI is right about MM filters coming in many forms.  If you have an iron problem you will better off using greensand filters.  You will need to pre-dose with chlorine and potassium permangante to oxidize the Fe(+2) to Fe(+3).

Put a layer of antracite on top of the greensand and you will have your iron filter.

RE: Multi media filters

hi coachk,

Rubber is banned for potable water
installations, and has been for a long
time because it supports Legionella
bacteria grwoth and proliferation.

cheers,

RE: Multi media filters

We are supplying our automatic selfcleaning filter unit with 25 and 10 micron screens (weavewire) are pre-filter to RO systems (in stead of sand filters).

ericwals, please let this board know how successful you are in achieving a SDI <5 with this type of filter.
