3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

(OP)
Please help settle a question of proper color coding of different 3phase voltages in motor control panels.
I have always been taught that 480v 3phase wiring, should be color coded as Brown, Orange, and Yellow. On 230v 3 phase, the color code is Black, Blue, and Red.
On systems using a "Stinger Leg" that leg should always be designated Orange. In the case of 230v 3phase, I would add an Orange tape marking to the Red leg to properly identify it as the stinger leg.
Please help in straightening this out. It sure would be helpful to be able to look into a panel, and note by the color coding, what were getting into... Thanks

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

Suggestion: Try
NFPA 70-1999 National Electrical Code for Color coding rules safety related.
NFPA 70E-1995 Standard for Electrical Safety Requirements for Employee Workplaces
etc.

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

hi ferrous,
just for the fun of it if you were down here in Australia its red, white blue for all 3 phase active circuits. Black in "fixed" wiring is reserved for nuetral or dc ground.
orange is not a standard color - mainly in electronic componenets
yellow was removed as a power color in about 1978 earth is strictly green withyellow stripe.

 flexibles are another thing again.
any way that probably doesn't help you but it is interesting to see the difference.

Regards Don

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

COLOUR COADING AS PER IEE REGULATION . RED YELLOW BLUE. BLACK. THREE PHASE . SINGLE PHASE RED & BLACK . PROTECTION CONDUCTOR YELLOW/GREEN.
FLEX. BROWN .PHASE. BLUE .NETURAL .

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

The ORANGE labeling for three phase systems is needed only for Delta systems with a center tapped transformer and only in panels where this grounding conductor is present.

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

Just for info, when I worked at one power plant the wiring code for ABC phases was Black, White, Red (BWR) because this was a GE Boiling Water Reacator (BWR) nuclear plant.

RE: 3 Phase Wire, Color Coding

Small encore: Nowadays, the manufacturers' catalogs or websites include very good closeups of verious equipment that includes multiphase connection and wiring. The colors may then be doublechecked with the manufacturer.
