Phase converter capacitor selection

Phase converter capacitor selection

Phase converter capacitor selection

(OP)
Hello everyone,

I am building a single to 3 phase converter and I need a motor run capacitor. I am using a 3 HP motor on 208 volts. As far as I have read, I need an oil-filled can-type capacitor, because these are rated for continuous ac duty, but are there any other types I can use? I will need about 80uF altogether. I am looking for other types of cap because none of the vendors my company deals with seem to sell the oil filled caps, and it would be a bit of a hassle to set up a new account for $20 worth of parts.

Thanks in advance,

-Mark

RE: Phase converter capacitor selection

Mark, Grainger and McMaster-Carr sell motor run capacitors.  You can't use the electrolytic type of capacitor or motor start capacitor.   You can also find motor run capacitors at most HVAC supply places.   Most will take cash if you walk in and give your company name.  McMaster Carr will let you order online and use your credit card.  You can also find them at some surplus places.

Thank You,Radar. Duke Power
