"Standard" Splice Designs

"Standard" Splice Designs

(OP)
I'm currently working on a project that involves field spliced W-Sections. The field splices need to develop the full moment capacity of the section. My question, are there any publications that give "standard" splices for a given section that will accomplish this, or is this just wishfull thinking? I'm working with a W12x35 section, 50ksi steel.

RE: "Standard" Splice Designs

Check out The Pile Buck Annual, pages 172 to 174.  It shows welded splicing of steel bearing piles for full bearing and moment capacity.  One of the details is an old Bethlehem Steel splice detail.

Look at www.pilebuck.com or call Pile Buck in Vero Beach, Florida (772-231-5200).  I'm not sure if the Annual is still available.

RE: "Standard" Splice Designs

Let me throw in my two cents worth on doing full penetration welds in the field:

1. Quality control of the welding even if the welder is AWS certified, you need to somehow convince yourself that the weld is inspected with methods outlined in AWS code.

2. Field welding is not cheap! Trust me. Why not design a bolted connection with splice plates for the webs and moment plates for the top and bottom flanges? I have developed a great method to compute this connection.

Shop welding is cheaper and easier to have QC. Field welding is more costly and requires, in my opinion, higher QC.

If you would like to see one of my worked bolted full moment splice calculations, let me know and we may be able to work something out.

Good luck.
