Material Specification

Material Specification

(OP)
Where can I find a UK granular fill specification? I have carried out particle size distribition tests and want to classify the material. I am also after compaction specifications for the material

RE: Material Specification

Sir Al would be your best bet - wait for him, I'm sure he will respond.

There is some data in Overseas Research Note 3 regarding gradings for subbases and bases.

Best regards -

RE: Material Specification

the most widely used fill classification specification in the UK is probably the Specification for Highway Works (600 Series). The spec not only provides classification by grading but also by CBR and UC, and states typical end use applications for each class of fill.

RE: Material Specification

Oh one other point, table 6-1 of the UK SHW also gives compaction method (roller weight, lift thicknesses and number of passes) for those fills suitable for use with method compaction (as opposed to end product compaction.)

RE: Material Specification

The absolute bible in the UK for material specification is The Specification for Highway Works. This document is being used extensivley to produce specification documents for many different types of project, which often have no relationship to a 'Highways' project.
The SHW is continually being reviewed, with a major revision due over the next 2 years, with the first ammendments due between Jan and Apr 2004. The big impact of this latest round of revisions, is the adoption of the 'New European' test standards, which will see the dropping of existing tests such as the 10% Fines Value and being replaced by the Los Angeles Coefficient test.
If you are going to use this document, please be aware of these changes and amendments, they WILL have an effect on the use of materials, which are acceptable and which are not.
