Pump Suction Bell design

Pump Suction Bell design

Pump Suction Bell design

(OP)
Does anyone have any links to a good reference on specifying/design pump suction bells?

Usually the pump manufactruer provides them to us but the last bell that was provided by pump supplier appeared questionable.

Thanks

RE: Pump Suction Bell design

Hello,

The design is not as important as the result. If the suction bell design looks questionable you should ask the mfg. for the frictional resistance in feet of their fitting and compare it to others. The mfg. should be able to provide this info. since they usually test to determine it when the pump is first designed.

Of course it's called a suction "bell" because the cross-section is similar to a bell that one rings, but having a smooth rolled edge at the inlet so that the entry or resistance coefficient K will be as low as possible.

While the manufacturer is ultimately to be consulted , to help you deal with him, following reference may be useful:

'Water intakes for circulating water pumps '- Pub. by BHRA(British Hydromechanics Research Association) - gives typical proportions for suction bells.

Good luck
Vishy.
