SolidWorks Keep freezing on our new P4 3.06 ????

SolidWorks Keep freezing on our new P4 3.06 ????

SolidWorks Keep freezing on our new P4 3.06 ????

(OP)

About 3 weeks ago I put a computer together for our engineering dept. and installed SW  sp3. Within hours the work station was getting screen freezes just on the SW app.. When it freezes we can still access the desk top and successfully run all other apps. There does not seem to be any pattern to the screen freezes other than it only happens to SW, it does not seem to matter how complex the graphics are or what other apps. are running. I’ve changed out the graphics card  back to the older one we had – a Nvidia Quadro 2 Pro 32MB – but still get the same results. I even did a complete re install of the operating system and SW but still the problem’s there.

These are the specs. of the new computer: P4 3.06,  Intel Desktop D865PERL MB,
2x  512MB Kingston DDR ECC RAM, Nvidia Gforce4  4200 128MB, WD 8OGB HDD with 8MB cache.

Does anyone have any idea what’s wrong. Could it be a compatibility issue, our SW reseller say not?

RE: SolidWorks Keep freezing on our new P4 3.06 ????

what operating system are you using. Also if it is XP look at task manager and see performance tab (memory usage)and applications running under the applications tab. Are you on a network and what virus software due you have installed.

check the tools > options > performance

there is a check box for use software, Open GL. try unchecking it if its checked. or vice versa.

I've typed this so many times, maybe I should write an FAQ, or at least a macro.

When using nVidia graphics card, DO NOT LET WINDOWS INSTALL A WINDOWS DRIVER.  Windows has default drivers for nVidia cards, but they are bad for SW.

Go to the nVidia website and download and install the latest driver from there.

I may make you feel, but I can't make you think.

I let my windows install it's driver then, once I'm back up I download the latest, install it, restart my computer and I don't have any problems.

Thank you Guys for the quick replies.

Rocko - I'm running Win2k fully service packed and updated. When I've checked Task Man. on that during freeze ups it does not show any in discrepancies.

Yes, I'm on a network running Norton Anti Virus Corporate Edition v 7.6 - On both installs I made sure I installed SW first then I added the AV.

Mitsu50 - I tried the checking and unchecking the OpenGL option but no good result -thanks anyhow.

The Tick - Dude thanks, this is one I have not tried and I am filled with hope that it will work. I'll let you know ASAP.

Sbaugh - Likewise I'm going to try it this afternoon.

LoveAeris - (Cool name) Thanks for the link I have checked that out already

It might be your Geforce4 4200 giving you the problems. SolidWorks only gives it a limited pass. A quadro or fireGL is recommended for SolidWorks.

Do you have problems with any other programs? In my experience, the screen freezing is usually a video card problem. You could try putting a game onto your computer to see if it will do 3D acceleration properly. Its quite likely that the video card drivers will have no issues with a game, but are balking at running SolidWorks.
