specific steel availability in Australia

Hi all.
Are there any fellow Australians in this forum? Im developing a pressure test chamber using EN25/26 steel due to its great high strength properties (and not particularly brittle). The only problem is that I cant get my hands on it in a billet with OD>250mm in Australia. I dont have six months to wait for it to be shipped, and would prefer not to pay the air freight for ~250kg of steel. I expect I will have the same problem with 4340. Does anybody have any suggestions as to alternate steels or, even better, a supplier for these steels in Oz? and please dont just refer me to Matweb! Thanks for your help :)

Cheers,

tsurani

This may be long shot but a number of years ago, it was possible to purchase second hand gun barrel material. I worked for a company that made extrusion die containers using this material at relatively low cost and with great success. Alternatively have you looked at forging the shape you want. It can be done.

Hi Beloka,
Thanks for the suggestions. Second hand gun barrel/breech material would be of particular interest, but as yet we have come up with nothing available. Do you have any contacts? We are currently looking into forging to size, but we are already pushing the strength limits of the material, and are not confident about maintaining these during forging. We need to prove this rig for up to 650MPa overpressure.

Thanks again!

Where abouts are you?, there is a place in Brisbane that would most likely have 4130/4340 in 250 mm diameter

Mal,
Im currently in Adelaide (contracted to DSTO). Would you mind providing me with details of the aforementioned suppliers in BrisVegas? Thanks.

If lead time is an issue, you can fabricate your pressure test chamber by welding boiler plates (AS 1548-7-460 or 490) which is profusely used for the fabrication of pressure vessels in Australia per AS 4041 code.
