carbon fiber retrofitting
carbon fiber retrofitting
(OP)
Anyone know where to find design aids for retrofitting w/carbon fiber. I have a hollow circular steel column that needs to have greater capacity.
When was the last time you drove down the highway without seeing a commercial truck hauling goods?

RE: carbon fiber retrofitting
Is this a structural column? Fiber carbon composites, as far as I know, are used in microstructures. Never heard of using them in buildings. They should be so expensive, aren't they?

On the other hand, if this application is some sort of clean area or an area where it would be impossible to have concrete or falsework then maybe...
As for design aids check out Hexcel-Fyfe on the internet and see if they have a website with product literature. At one time they did have information available, however, I'm not sure if it pertains to steel columns.

As far as the bridge is concerned I think you are talking about the so called smart bridge at Headingly. It was built with technology from ISIS & Dr. Sami Rizzkalla from U of M. I think the contractor was Kraft but not sure. If you can find ISIS web site no doubt they will tell you about it.
Other bridges have been built using FRP glulam but mostly in Wash./Oregon States. Company in B.C. bought the rights and sells in Japan also.
RE: carbon fiber retrofitting
My experience has only been in bridge repair and dynamic building repairs, both with prestressed concrete.
Many carbon fiber composite products work similarly to what you are contemplating. Check with one of the composity flagpole manufacturers. They might have something.
Otherwise, contact Sika for their CF repair info (www.sika.com)
