Re: Folders in the feature tree

Re: Folders in the feature tree

Re: Folders in the feature tree

(OP)
Am I the only one bugged by this?
The ability to put parts in the feature tree into folders is a great leap forward IMHO because it allows me to organize my feature tree and shrink it down to a managable size.
What I don't like is the fact that everytime I rebuild, SW expands all the folders making me go down the list compacting them again.  Is this the way it is intended to work?  Another quirk that bugs me is the fact that if I select a part in the model window, it doesn't highlight in the feature tree if it is in a folder, even an expanded folder.  It would make a lot more sense if it highlighted the folder and the part in the feature tree.  That way if the folder is compacted you would know which one the part is in and could expand it and see the highlighted part.  Seems logical to me, but it is not the way it works on my installation.
To all you VAR's out there, please make this issue a requested enhancement.  If any body else is bugged by this, please back me up.

Thanks for listening to my vent,

Timelord

Have you submitted an enhancement request?

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

For what it's worth...

I opened one of my parts that is organized with folders in SW2003 SP3.1 on Win2000.  I don't have any of the problems you are describing.  When I select a feature, the folder expands and the feature is highlighted.  When I rebuild, the folders don't expand.

So, at least we know it's not a universal problem.

I may make you feel, but I can't make you think.

Tick,

Thanks for the constructive feedback.  I'll contact my VAR and see if he can figure out why it doesn't work like that for me.

Update to all,

Talked to my VAR,  seems I had complained about this to him months ago and I had forgotten about it (must be oldtimers disease).  He is able to duplicate it on an intermittant basis (not intermittant for me) and he had submitted an SPR last time I talked to him.  SPR# 155808  Predates last service pack, so it must be real low priority.
An everyday frustration for me!

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

I've noticed that there can be some subtle behavior differences in SW products depending on how they were installed (traditional vs. Windows Installer mode).  Maybe a reinstall is in order?

I may make you feel, but I can't make you think.

Tick,

Been there done that, doesn't help!  I have always used the traditional installer, never tried the Windows installer because of the other problems associated with it.

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

I get differentr behaviours on this, from parts, to assemblies.

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

Anytime I get folders expanding, what I do is I close them do a Ctrl-Q and keep doing that till they stop. Usally takes about 2-4 times.

See if that helps,

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

Scott,

Ten Cntrl-Q's (closing folder in between) and it still expanded every time.
Besides what is the difference if you have to Contrl-Q or just close the folder?  It's still an extra click.

Timelord

P.S.  Any relation to Steve Baugh in Albuquerque?

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

Close the folder means you just closed the folder in FM.

A Ctrl-Q rebuilds everything from the top of the FM tree to the bottom. It works for me on folders and sub-assemblies in main assemblies that continue to expand in the FM. The way I understand this is, if there is a feature or part that requires a Rebuild, then it will expand the folder or sub-assembly to inform the user. When you do a CTRL-Q it rebuilds that feature or part of a sub-asesmbly from the top of the FM to the bottom. A CTRL-Q works better than a regular Rebuild. Clicking the rebuild icon only rebuilds that last feature.

It was worth a try for you since nothing else works...Did you have your VAR try it out on the SP4 or had SW try it out on SP4? I'm sure your VAR is using the Beta release of SW04, ask him to try it out there and see what the results are.

RE: Re: Folders in the feature tree

One of our guys writes a lot of API stuff for our custom tools and SmarTeam interface. He has some which expand or contract feature manager trees in the process.  Take a look to see if you could make something work for your specific problem.
