Possible LED Display

Possible LED Display

Possible LED Display

(OP)
I'm currently exploring options to set up a production status display board with 18 rows and 21 collumns of lights.

The lights are going to be either red (behind time), green (ahead of time) or blue (on time) and the number of lights switched on or off on each collumn depends on the number of days ahead or behind.

I have come to two possible options

1: A super bright white LED behind a colured diffuser / lens

2: A number (say 7) of super bright 10mm coloured LEDs with no lens to simulate one light.

The max number of lights on at any one time is 270.

Will the one white LED provide enough light?
Will the coloured LEDs use to much power?

I thank you for any insight.

RE: Possible LED Display

This will use a lot of power and whether a white LED will provide enough light depends on your ambient light level and how far away it has to be seen. To tell you the truth it sounds like a lot of trouble to go through for this. Is this something that will only be updated once a day? Will it be updated with switches or are you making a computer interface too.

If it will only be updated once a day and with someone fliping switches, a mechanical solution may be more appropriate and a lot less work.

RE: Possible LED Display

How about using 7 segments that indicate your days. you will need 1-1/2 to display "18" days.
some of the LED (dual colour) can be green/red depend on the supply connection or can be yellow if AC is applied.
Either you find a 7 segment that big enough or you can construct it your self.
