Radial pattern of feature w/sketch plane normal to axis

Radial pattern of feature w/sketch plane normal to axis

(OP)
How do I create a radial pattern of a protrusion when the protrusions sketch plane is normal to the axis of rotation.

I'm trying to create a radial pattern of a protrusion around a circular base protrusion (similar to a gear and it's teeth).

I've tried creating reference datums on the fly to use when creating the sketch but the "pattern feature" doesn't allow me to use any of those dimensions in the definition of the pattern.

Thanks
Peter

Hi,
One thing I can think of is using the "make datum" feature but, orient your sketch so that you are viewing it from the side and not face on. This means that your sketch plane will be "through" your axis of rotation and not tangent to your cylindrical object. I am taking my best shot here - without seeing your model.....

cheers,

JW

Thanks JW,

Yes I have thought of that. It would require a "base" extrusion and then other sketches referenced only to that extrusion (normal to the axis of rotation)that wittle away to form the exact profile and then pattern the whole group, that just seems more complicated than it should.
Maybe I've been using UG to long.

Thanks

Peter

Using a make datum for the reference worked.
I was picking the protrusion from the screen for the pattern command when I should have been picking the group from the model tree. <Slapping myself on the forehead>

Oh to be a UG user who now gets to work with Pro/E.

Your problem is probably due to the fact that you were not using the regular Feature Pattern menu and not the Group Pattern functionality.

I've been using UG for a few months and am beginning to wonder why basic things do not work and why I have to mostly workarounds to get anything done.

Pro/E will take some time to get used to but once you learn it you'll be much happier with it than UG.

I'm using Wildfire SE at home.

<<Oh to be a UG user who now gets to work with Pro/E.>>

Actually, I would be happy to just find a job at this point <grin>, using UG or Pro/E or Solidworks or Inventor.

I like Pro/E very much, I also like UG very much. I think you may learn to like UG after you use and learn it more.
