304 SS and hydrogen sulfide

(OP)
Is type 304 stainless steel a suitable material for a sludge storage tank where the sludge will have a hydrogen sulfide concentration of 5,600 ppm (v)?

Thankyou, tankguy

RE: 304 SS and hydrogen sulfide

There is no danger in using 304 at ambient teperatures. sulfudation starts above 300C. It is negligible below that.

RE: 304 SS and hydrogen sulfide

Mcguire is correct.  Also, nickel can consume 15% percent its own volume in hydrogen as it approaches high temperatures.  Which can lead to further problems.

RE: 304 SS and hydrogen sulfide

Just don't weld it unless it is dual stamped 304/304L.  Welding will cause sensitization unless an "L" grade is ued, and can lead to polythionic stress corrocsion cracking
