RE: tolerence for carbon steel plates

It depends on which standard is referenced, what the nominal thickness is, and what the width of the plate is.  As an example, ASTM A 6M, has the following tolerance data:

Specified thickness = 55 mm

Permitted variation under specified thickness = 0.3 mm

Permitted variation over specified thickness = 2.0 mm for plate 1200 mm wide and under.

Permitted variation over specified thickness = 3.8 mm for plate 4200 mm wide and over.

RE: tolerence for carbon steel plates

While reviewing the standards and the acceptable tolerances, it is best to have the mill or supplier measure the material if it will be critical for your application's clean-up or exact fit. I have found that even when the design take all the possible tolerances into account, manufacturing will use the material that is available even if it is on the high side or low side of the industry specification. To be absolutlely sure, measure at the source.
