Appropriate Magnetic Sensor Application / Selection

Appropriate Magnetic Sensor Application / Selection

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question however, let me give it a shot.  We are investigating the use of a magnetic sensor in conjuction with a paddle wheel to measure fluid flow (gas or liquid).  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with such a design specifically with respect to the type of sensors better suited for this application.  What are the advantages of one type of sensor over another for this?  Thanks in advance.

RE: Appropriate Magnetic Sensor Application / Selection

Hi.

My suggestion is to use a "rate interval indicator'. You can have the paddle that is slow turning with extended shaft that has a capability of placing a gear at the end. Place a proximity sensor (magnetic) right by the teeth
which then sends pulses to a rate inidicator.

It is important to note that full calibration of the indicator is necessary to give you an accurate reading. Like knowing how many gallons into number of pulses, etc.

One site you can visit is as follows:

www.redlion.com

..some rate indicators, totalizers with some application hints and example. You should be able to access their on-line catalogue. If not, it is worth asking for a hard copy.

Hope this helps.

RE: Appropriate Magnetic Sensor Application / Selection

There are several manufacturers who make fluid flow measurment devices built with the design you describe.  These are usually off the shelf items, depending on your medium, piping size, and flow rate. Omega has low cost examples shown in their catalog, for example. dydt's comment regarding calibration is important to note, as the rheology of each fluid results in differing flow characteristcs.  Obviously, fluid and ambient temps, along with any hazardous area classifications can increase the cost and limit abailablility of inexpensive solutions.

This has been very helpful.  After reading your postings it seems obvious that I probably should have been looking to an existing off the shelf solution.  I'll pursue these leads for now.  Thanks again all!!
