Terminology - Second moment of area

Terminology - Second moment of area

Terminology - Second moment of area

(OP)
Hi all,

Where I went to school we used a quantity called second moment of area to give us information about a sections profile for bending calculations. (=BD³/12 for rectangular sections).

The people who wrote Pro E however, must have gone to a different school as this quantity is not displayeed in their section properties.

Is that what the Area moment of inertia is?

Cheers

Hayden

Yep, that's the one.

The "moment of inertia" and "second moment of area" are one in the same thing.  Most textbooks I have seen use the term "moment of inertia" more often.

RE: Terminology - Second moment of area

I always use and was tought "moment of Inertia" on this one. Didn't know there were other names :-p

Location, location, location.

I'm from New Zealand and now living in the UK. Here they call it second moment of area too.

RE: Terminology - Second moment of area

'seems everyone is correct... You can change the units displayed by setting up a user defined set of units for the part.
Setup --> units.  From here you are able to set the units for each type of measurment.  Now recalculate the model analysis and you will see the units that you are familiar with using.
