Press fit II

Press fit II

Press fit II

(OP)
More specifically, I have a device that has a press fit handle. The pins and the holes for the press fitting are not exposed, kind of like a plastic squirt gun. Those are sometimes ress fitted and glued. Anyway, how could I disasemble the hanle of this device without damaging it. Also, there is a hole in the back of the handle that alows you to see the pins connected to the holes of the press fit. I'm wondering if I can use this opening and possibly get a tool that will use tension to separate the two mating pieces of the handle. Kinda like the squirt gun that has a hole at the back where you can fill it with water. Imagine trying to use that hole and insert something that can be used to disassemble the squirt gun with damaging the the gun.

Can anyone help????

RE: Press fit II

You obviously need to impart some separating force, either internally or externally. If there are not features on the exterior on which get a purchase and you don't want to drill or weld or adhesive-bone, you could try suction cups or magnets on an outside surface or make a fitting to put into the hole in the back and pressurize the cavity.

If you pressurize, be very careful that you don't overpressurize and make yourself a little bomb.

You might also be able to make a small mechanism with a lead screw and crank, something like a car jack.

Heating the side with the bosses would help to loosen the press fits.

Depending on the configuration, you might be out of luck, though.

RE: Press fit II

You must get the handle apart first.  If it is the size of a squirt gun and for some reason it was not made to come apart you may need to drill holes in the handle to expose the pins, it may be necessary to use some epoxy to seal it up in the end.  If the "gun" doesn't work now, what do you have to lose?  If the pins are indeed metal you can use a center punch, a hammer and some sort of a cylinder on the back side for support.  I've found great success with a properly sized socket to use as a support.  Good luck.
