how to select which view is parent?

how to select which view is parent?

how to select which view is parent?

In drawings how do I make a different view the parent view?

RE: how to select which view is parent?

You can't.

RE: how to select which view is parent?

Hmmm, spoke faster than I could think that time.  There is a workaround.

Use the view that you wish to use for your new parent to generate new projected and auxiliary views, including the original parent.  Those new "chld" views will follow their parent, not their "grandparent".  You can then delete the obsoleted parent.

You can move a dimension from one view to another by holding Shift when you click-drag the dimension to the new view.  It doesn't always work, but when it does, it saves much time.

I don't think you'll be able to "transfer custody" of detail and section views that belong to the obsoleted parent.

Look into view rotate.  You can rotate the oiginal parent and have the children views update along with it.  This may suit your needs, as well.

Good golly, that's a lot to say after first saying it wasn't posible!

All this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted.

But is there a way to select which view is parent after all the views have been created?

RE: how to select which view is parent?

Not that I know of.

RE: how to select which view is parent?

The parent view is usally the front view (depending on how you made the drawing). You can change the view oreintation in the part and change the front views appearance. Meaning if you want the right side to be the front you have to change the view orientation of it in the model. Then the drawing updates with the right side as your new parent or front view.

Or

When making the drawing and inserting your views you can break their alignment and realign the views to make the right or even the bottom view the parent. But you will have to break all alignments and re align each view manaully. There is no quick switch.

FAQ731-376
When in doubt, always check the help

RE: how to select which view is parent?

When I design components, I design them based on the orientation they will be viewed by in a Front-LH isometric drawing.

I always Insert Named Views to create drawings, and by default, the first view you insert into a drawing is the parent view.  I feel I get more control doing it this way.

Wanna Tip? FAQ731-376
"Probable impossibilities are to be preferred to improbable possibilities."

RE: how to select which view is parent?

You can define custom formats with pre-selected (starting)views arrangements.  So try making one with only one view (the one you want as parent) then drag-n-drop the part to it.  Named views will help with this.
