Marine Paint spec

(OP)
Hi there,

(also posted in "paint/coatings" forum)

We have some mechnical equipment operating right on the edge of shipping berths.  An intitial paint system specified was as follows:
     - Abrasive blast to SA 2 1/2.
     - First coat inorganic zinc silicate. 70 - 85 um DFT.
     - Second coat high build epoxy. 100 - 125 um DFT.
     - Third coat high build epoxy. 100 - 125 um DFT.

Our customer has indicated they would like a top coat to retain its finish as long as possible.  I have been recomended a urethane top coat by our paint supplier to replace listed top coat of high build epoxy. Said to provide good UV prtection and gloss retention.

Does this seem a reasonable system?

Dave

RE: Marine Paint spec

Yes, PU will have better UV resistance than epoxy.  Epoxy is not stable to UV radiation, and will significantly degrade (called chalking) under long-term exposure.  Your three-coat paint spec should provide outstanding corrosion protection.
