Flux Core Arc Welder drive wheels- correct style

Flux Core Arc Welder drive wheels- correct style

(OP)
I would like to get some input on the right drive wheels for use on Flux-Core, .045 8100w wire. Our supplier wants to sell us 8 new "state of the art" guns. Oxo brand. The premise is that the new design will reduce maintainace costs, i.e. contact tips, nozzels, diffusers etc.
We have been advised that we are using the wrong drive wheels on our Hobart 2210 wire feeder, all though we had no probs. with them for the last 10 years.
I was advised by the OXO Rep. that the double cog drive wheels, that I have used without any pobs. are the source of the trouble.
I am not convinced of this as the prob. has not gone away (i.e. stuttering upon start of the Arc.)My company has purchased ,and tried every know configeration of drive wheels available to correct this prob.
My company makes expansion systems for elevated highways in New York State and N.Y city.

RE: Flux Core Arc Welder drive wheels- correct style

The wheels I use on flux core are serrated, I presume to allow a good grip without crushing the wire.
When you say aputtering do you mean the arc is shorted out by driving the wire into the base metal on the initial start. I was having that problem until I actually read the manual for our welders and found out there was as setting that allowed a slow feed of the wire until an arc was established and then it would ramp up to the correct speed. This prevented the wire contacting the base metal with a lot of speed behind, driving the operators hand back and creating a pendulum effect....Mike

Stuttering on start - have you tried dressing off your ground clamps lately?

Intimidator3:

How long has it been since you've cleaned your liners?  Sometimes they need to be replaced too.  We always use knurled drive rolls for flux core wire.
If the arc is stuttering upon start, and not during weld, chances are it's an electrical problem, ie. bad ground as Ornerynorsk has suggested.
