Solidworks was working, but not anymore
Solidworks was working, but not anymore
(OP)
Hi there,
I have a PC with C500 CPU, 128Mb RAM, 16Mb Matrox G400
and Win98Se. Solidworks 2000 SP2 was working for about a
week, and then kept coming up with an error about MFC42.dll
I read somewhere to upgrade to Win2K, so I did that, but now I get an exception error at c0005 ... bonus.
So I tried to get it running on my Win2K system, with
256Mb RAM and 8Mb TNT2M64 card. Works OK, but keeps
freezing up. I installed Win2K Sp1, and then it would not work at all. Nothing happens. So I re-installed, and the
very same thing happens.
I pulled out a third PC, an IBM Netvista with an integrated 810 video chip fearing it would not even run, but it has been dead stable.
Can somebody please make sense of what I am doing wrong. I have tried all the latest drivers from the various vendors for the video cards.
Thanks in advance
Gavin Rewell

RE: Solidworks was working, but not anymore
Look for the thread on "Problems Installing SW 2001."
Your c000005 problem is currently being discussed on www.topica.com
Search for the string in the "SW CAD" forum on "Exeption number: c0000005 (access violation)..."
If you can't access this, let me know and I can attempt to email you the "cut-n-paste" versions of the forums.

From reading your post, you have done the right thing by changin to W2K, but I would look at changing your video card to a Oxygen GVX-1 or a Elsa.

The reason it's freezing is probably because your running out of memory on your card. If you push SW with a 8mb or the 16mb Matrox, it will freeze. I use a Geforce Ultra 2 with 64mb on board on my home computer. When I push SW at home, I can get SW to freeze with that card! I'm running W2K also.
I can't guarntee that this will fix all your problems, but it's worth tring I think.
Hope this helps,

RE: Solidworks was working, but not anymore
Thanks a heap for all the suggestions. Still won't work on any other PC than the Netvista though.
I have learned two things:1. I feel totall inadequate when I read about guys who suggest 2.5 Gig (!!!) swapfiles because they have 1Gb RAM!!!, and 2) I have no idea how to push SW because I only just got it going and have only a few lessons at Uni.
The Netvista with the 810e chipset is so far fine, so I will try and forget the other boxes until such time as it becomes a problem again. Just weird that the graphics are so weak, and yet it works fine .... Must be an OS installation problem I reckon.
Thanks again
Gavin
RE: Solidworks was working, but not anymore
I bring this up not because it will solve your problem, but because it brings a point that you must look in the oddest places sometimes to find the answer. With MS applications becoming more dependent upon each other and SolidWorks becoming more dependent on M$ applications, we may see problems like this occur more frequently.
