Improve stepping motor step accuracy

(OP)
I'm designing in a stepping motor in optical disc drive. The step accuracy is poor. Microstepping is adopted. Step accuracy improves, but still not good enough. Any idea how to improve the step size? I'm not considering of reduction in leadscrew pitch size.

RE: Improve stepping motor step accuracy

alignment is critical when you're trying to work "down in the grass".

RE: Improve stepping motor step accuracy

Hi, use encoder feedback.

RE: Improve stepping motor step accuracy

You could go to a stepper that instead of 1.8 deg/step, it is 0.9 or lower yet. Custom non-standard (not your typical 1.8 degree hybrid), then through your microsteppig on top of it. Not sure if it will gain you anything, so as mentioned above, add an encoder.

Are you sure that the inaccuracies aren't coming from the lead screw?

Could look at direct-drive & sevo systems too.

Check with Lin Engineering in Calif.
He makes small angle steppers and can help with details of inertia.
