Cutting Helical sweep from a cylinder

(OP)
I am trying to cut a helical sweep from a cylinder (work in progress file avail on request) but only seem to be able to end up with a merged result rather than a helical slot down the tube. idea's or solution greatly appricated

Use insert- cut -sweep from the top pull down menus.  This should take care of the problem.

You would use the insert- cut- sweep when you are creating the sweep for the first time. Another way would be to uncheck the merge result box when creating the sweep.  You can also edit definition of the existing part and uncheck it there.  You would then be left with two solid bodies, and can use the insert- feature- combine from the top pull down menu to subtract the sweep from the tube.
