Thread Stress Calculations

Can anybody direct me to a book or website that describes the work of Heywood/Kelley-Pedersen in relation to short cantilevers and their use in thread stress calculations?

Cheers.

RE: Thread Stress Calculations

Hello Fawkes,

See "Formulas for Stress & Strain" by Warren C Young. In my copy, 6th Edition it is on pages 203-204

Neilmo,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I've got a copy of Roark's 6th Ed. What I'm looking for is a bit more depth on the subject.

RE: Thread Stress Calculations

The book that has details on this is "Designing by Photoelasticity" by Heywood. Some of his work on short cantilever beams is covered in the Roark books but Heywood's photoelasticity book has more detail. In fact, Roark references Heywood's work in his text. I think you can get the book at www.abebooks.com.

His developement is based on using photoelasticity models to determine the actual peak stress in the corner of the short beam. The equation he developed can be used to determine the stress in gear teeth, threads, and T-head structures. I hope this helps.

Anthonyr

I take it that this is not the same book as "Photoelasticity for Designers" by Heywood - I happen to have that book and it's not in there.

Given you a star Anthonyr, I managed to find a UK holder of the book, now I've got to try and get it.

Anybody else provide further references please keep it coming.

RE: Thread Stress Calculations

EnglishMuffin, the book I am refering to is "Designing by Photoelasticity" by Heywood. The short beam development should be in Chapter 6, page 210.

RE: Thread Stress Calculations

Anthonyr - yes, I see now that Heywood must have written two books with slightly different titles - they are both available on abebooks.com - sorry.

RE: Thread Stress Calculations

I am working on a similar situation and need to calculate the force required to tensile load a molded thread from an assembly.  I have come across the need for more information on this equation as well.  Any luck?  I've got lab data and need to determine theoretical calculations.
