Dornier 328 slush protection covers repair

Dornier 328 slush protection covers repair

(OP)
Hi guys,

Here is my problem. Dornier 328 slush protection covers (composite solid laminates located in MLG wheel well) have a protective PTEF(Teflon)-foil peeling off in service.

We have repaired a several of them by strictly following the Dornier's inspection / repair instructions given in AMM JIC 53-83-90-200-00-AA0 / JIC 53-83-90-300-AA0. We bonded the replacement PTEF-foil (Dornier Spec DOLN359-025D), supplied by customer, to the slush cover surface with sealant PR-1422 B2.

However, the customer demonstrated unhappiness on the aesthetics and durability of such repair and encouraged us to try to come up with an alternative to the foil (i.e. coating).

A coating (approved by Dornier) that we could use for this purpose is 23T3 series abrasion resistant polyurethane coating (BMS 10-86, type I, grade D). We believe it would stick better and definitely look nicer, however, Dornier's AMM JIC 53-83-90-200-00-AA0 restricts the usage of the coating to lower surface of slash covers only (a height of 12.6 inches max. from the lower edge). If the PTEF-foil is peeled of with a height of more than 12.6 inches, the replacement PTFE-foil should be applied instead of coating.

Does anyone have an idea what would be the reason the 23T3 coating can not be applied over the entire surface?

I tried to get an answer from Dornier, but they would have to charge me for that.

Your response in regards to this matter will be much appreciated.

Best Regards
Rados

RE: Dornier 328 slush protection covers repair

Hi Rados

Not sure why you would'nt be allowed to apply the coating all over, also i take it that by a slush cover you mean a fairing that protects the wheel bay from debris while taxiing and when the gear retracts?

I work mainly on military jets and we use two processes that my be of interest to you, the first is called "Dinitrol" its like an undreseal for aircraft and protects langing gear bays from water ingress and grit. It is applied with a simple spray gun but it is only a finish coat

The other process that may be of more interest is a type of polymer tape we are currently trialing for rain erosion protection on leading edge carbon fibre skins and panels

It is manufactured by 3M and is availiable in diferent widths and sheets. the panel is degreased with alcohol a clear primer/adhesion promoter applied and the tape is then stuck into place and smoothed down. an optional edge sealer can be used if the area is prone to hydraulic leaks or fuel.

The tape sticks like "shit to a blanket" but can be removed if needed, it has a clear gloss finish leaving the that existing paint finish visible,

Unfortunatly i dont have any of the specs or exact part numbers to hand but if you are interested i can get them for you

hope some of this is of use to you

Hi Andy,

Thank you very much for your reply. I would be very interested in getting some more information from you about a 3M polymer tape and a sealer you guys are using (i.e. part numbers, specs, process).

Hi Andy,

Any luck with an info about 3M polimer tape / sealer? Here is my e-mail and fax number in case you manage to find some specs and p/n's for me.

Andy
I spent 5 years in Wessling starting with the 328JET conversion and then laying out the 728/928/528 empennage.

Dornier took DTA "crack propagation" very seriously with regards to ClI/II laminates. I suspect that the restiction on splash plate coverings was due to an ability to inspect for BVID.  Hope this helps ...

A little late but...

Try this:
http://www.3m.com/us/mfg_industrial/indtape/
  Protection
    3M™ Protective Tapes
       3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8671HS

It is a clear protective tape by 3M.
