Weld Process for 2024 and 7075 Aluminum
Weld Process for 2024 and 7075 Aluminum
(OP)
I am having difficulty finding a welding process for 2024 and 7075 aluminum. I understand that it is not advisable to weld the two types due to intergranular stress corrosion and brittlement issues. However, for a short term interim repair on nonload bearing structure it may prove acceptable. Any help on a published would be appreciated.

Contact the good people at www.alcotec.com
They are the aluminum welding experts IMHO. Lincoln is pretty good, but not as knowledgable as Alcotec IMHO again. I and a number of my clients have attended their Al welding seminars.
Typically, the GMAW or GTAW process are commonly used to join these materials.
I will not recommend a filler metal or electrode due to the following reasons:
*I don't know the the specific types of materials you are joining (you specified alloy designation only),
*don't know exactly what your application is,
*mixing these two alloys could be difficult.
Contact Alcotec or Lincoln Electric (www.lincolnelectric.com) and please post your results.
