Mixing of High Viscosity fluids

Hi all,

We are going to mix two high viscous fluids. I want to try a static mixer with helical coils in it.

Anybody experience with this?
Anybody got a nice report (PDF) on this issue?

My experience with static mixers is that they have a VERY large pressure drop - if your energy balance can afford to lose a hundred psi across one, they work very well.

The three principle Static Mixer suppliers can all meet this requirement - I doubt that the pressure drop across any of our units would be as high as 100 psi - for example, we supply Polyester coolers (Static mixers with coils in)operating at 278,000 cP and normal delta P is around 5 bar.

For mixer information try www.baker.org, http://imhefwww.epfl.ch/lmf/main.html and others like statiflo, Koch-glitch etc. However, you could also visit www.Jiskoot.com. They provide blending systems for viscous fluids and use the jet-mixing principal as this is very efficient and doesn't tip your pressure drop balance into the red.

Is heating the liquids before mixing prohibited ? If not, try to reduce their viscosities by heating them. Heating, mixing and then cooling back may be more energy efficient than mixing them as is.
