Roskam: Airplane Design

Roskam: Airplane Design

Roskam: Airplane Design

(OP)
Hi all.
Does anyone has experience with design books written by Jan Roskam or his AAA-software?

Thanks, Kaspar

RE: Roskam: Airplane Design

They are great books. Don't know anything about the software. I made my own in MathCad.

RE: Roskam: Airplane Design

As a personal exercise last year, I took a light twin concept of my own through Roskam's Part One.  The configuration stood up fairly well to comparison and I learned a lot about how a choice in one part affected the others, including fuel weights, landing gear weights, and cabin size. Roskam considers things that don't get discussed in great detail in other books, yet can make or break a design.
I haven't been into the subsequent books in great detail, but they're nearby on the shelf, calling out to me.....

RE: Roskam: Airplane Design

Michael996,

I use MathCAD extensively at work, yet when I read thru Roskam's books, I did everything on paper.  Did you make MathCad files of an input/output nature, or were they just notes as you followed along?  If the files are of the former type, I would be very interested in a copy of them.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Roskam: Airplane Design

I used Roskam's books and AAA in my senior design class back in college.  Historically, if you go through all the hand calcs (I remember those nights) and crosscheck with AAA, your design will be viable.  We built a subscale demonstrator based on our preliminary design: the thing took off by accident, stalled, and pulverized on a supposed high-speed taxi test.  Our results were not typical.  We just blamed the pilot.

RE: Roskam: Airplane Design

If anyone has questions about the AAA software, or the books, you may send them directly to me.  I will answer any technical related questions, and if I can't, Dr. Roskam will more than likely have the answer.
