UST37-2 Steel

UST37-2 Steel

UST37-2 Steel

(OP)
Ok, here is what may be a very challenging question.  I am currently a program manager on a program that involves build to print only, no engineering authority.  The current drawings and parts lists call out a lot of UST37-2 steel.  From the research I have done, ST standards are old Russian standards, UST37-2 is a wide range of galvanized steels.  Currently it looks like I will need approximately 100 tons.  Some of it is 2-2.5 inch thick, down to 2.5mm sheet.

Now the tough one, how do I get UST37-2 domestically (in the US)?  I have been told by the customer (in writing) that DIN 17100 is an acceptable substitute, but again, I need to find it in the US, German specs aren't commonly available.

Also, an equivalent can be approved by a customer, but as it is a foreign company/government, export laws start to get in the way, so suggesting an "equivalent" becomes tough, but if something available in the US commercially is a close approximation (Chemistry, strength, tolerances) I would appreciate the suggestion.  Thanks,

Chad

RE: UST37-2 Steel

The DIN 17100 is the German standard for structural steels (general purpose). St37-2 is the grade and the 'U' refers to the fact that it is rimmed steel (partially deoxidised).

See

For more clarification.

As to finding an equivalent, it seems to be a low strength carbon steel - try looking up ASTM A283 for an equivalent.

Good luck

RE: UST37-2 Steel

USt37.2 is just plain structural steel equivalent to
ASTM A 36.

Thanks for the info guys, I have a better grip on the steels now.

Another question, all the carbon steel on the project is galvalized, but I don't see that the ST37-2 spec indicates that, am I correct?  Also, on tolerances, what sets the tolerance for the DIN17100, is it a mill by mill or customer by customer number?  I see in the ASTM A283 tolerances are according to A6.  Most critical is a  2.5 mm callout, the rest is machined so tolerances there are a moot point for ordering.  Can I order ASTM A283 in 2.5mm and get the same tolerances as a UST37-2 2.5mm?
