RE: Difference between a proprietary and non-proprietary Fieldbus

A proprietary fieldbus is one developed by a specific company and retained by that company for use with its own components and products only.

A nonproprietary, or open, fieldbus, has standards that are available to any company (often for a fee) that allow the company to develop devices that can communicate with that protocol.
