Maximum memory Pro-E can use

Maximum memory Pro-E can use

Maximum memory Pro-E can use

(OP)
We have recently accuired some new machines that have slots for up to 8 gig of memory. The computer guy tells me that windows can only handle 2 gig. I say this as we are struggling with large assemblies. I find it hard to believe that we are limited to 2 gig of memory. Does anyone now if it possible to utilise more memory, the machines are hp workstation xw8000. Or if not what do people run Pro-e on to handle large assemblies?

RE: Maximum memory Pro-E can use

The memory limitation is handled by the operating system and not by PRO/E. But 2 GIG of RAM is good enough for PRO/ENGINEER.

Have you considered running under a UNIX platform?

Cheers guys, I don't think we can change to unix. It is more a case of working Pr0-e more efficiently.

RE: Maximum memory Pro-E can use

No matter how efficient something is, at some point things get too large.

The specifics of 2 GB--2 GB is the maximum number allowable in a 32-bit operating system. So just going to UNIX won't cut it--it more specifically has to be a 64-bit operating system.

Note however that I've heard of some way to "trick" Windows into handling up to 3 GB.  I've not done it myself, but two people I know of have.  You may want to check with Microsoft's website on this.

RE: Maximum memory Pro-E can use

The 2 Gig limit is (I believe) the limit on a single file.  2^32 = 4 Gig, the max you can address with a 32 bit system.  For really big files you do need a 64 bit operating system and processor.  However, I think you should really explore all the things Pro/E gives you for reducing memory requirements when dealing with large assemblies.  I'm no expert on this as but there are many ways to limit what you have in memory or displayed to speed things up.

RE: Maximum memory Pro-E can use

everyone here given a very good guidelines about the memory space.but as you asked to handle the large assemblies you can use simplified reps and create as many as reps you want to work.
