HELP! pro/e to maya

HELP! pro/e to maya

HELP! pro/e to maya

(OP)
I have recieved a 200 meg .igs file from a client that includes a model that i need to get into maya. I know maya supports both .igs and .obj but the igs itself is too large for maya to handle according to alias tech support. So what i am trying to do is convert the .igs to a .ob to import into maya. I am hoping that the conversion will make the file manageable. The problem i am running into is that when i hit save as and choose obj it tels me i need to add groups in order to export them. I can't even select objects in my file let alone figure out how to add groups. Could someone please walk me through this or if theres a better way to get this file into maya i would love to hear it. Please let me know.

RE: HELP! pro/e to maya

If Maya supports OBJ, then import IGES in PRO/E and export them in OBJ, because Pro/E can export OBJ.

i am having trouble actualy trying to export as obj. when i chose save as .obj i get a dialog box saying i ned to select groups and or quilts and add them to the export. I have no idea how to add these as I can't even seem to select the model at all. The only control I seem to have is the spin and zoom control. Could someone please tell me step by step how to get this file to export as obj?

RE: HELP! pro/e to maya

I don't know MAYA, I know only 3DSTUDIO so I will respond according to my knowledge, presuming MAYA does the same thing as 3D STUDIO:

In the dialog, do these:

1. Select the parts you want to export to MAYA;

2. Select a coordinate system for UV maping when PRO/E asks for it - look at the message area;

WARNING: Pro/E will not wait until you select a Coordinate system. If you hit ENTER key without selecting the coordinate system, all your selection is lost!

3. Fill in the file name for each partys or group;
(Do this before hitting the APPLY button)

4. Modify the CHORD HEIGHT and ANGLE CONTROL;

5. Hit APPLY button to see the result. WARNING - If you hit the AAPPLY button, Pro/E will export the file in obj format;

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 untill you find the right settings;

IF you hit OK, PRO/E will save the OBJ but will exit from dialog so you have to restart export procedure each time. Use only APPLY button, but pay attention to change the file name for next part or group!

7. Delete the part/group (with DELETE button)

8. Repeat STEPS 1-5

If you choose to select part by part, without grouping, this can take a lot of time if you have many parts, but gives the advantage of manipulating each part independent in MAYA.

I suggest you to make a test to see how MAYA will read the group OBJ created with Pro/E.

Good luck,

-Hora

thanks for the help everyone. finally got it into maya by creating a shrink wrap. this brought the file down small enough that maya could handle the iges. Thanks again!
