Surface Roughness Standards

Surface Roughness Standards

Surface Roughness Standards

(OP)
I am looking for a handy chart that will show and relate values of mmetal, surface roughness between ISO, JIS, DIN, and ANSI. Does anyone know where to get that type of reference information, on the Web or elsewhere?

RE: Surface Roughness Standards

dmtaurus,
Surface roughness units are either in micrometers or microinches, and the units should be stated along with the required value. ISO and DIN are metric, ANSI is inch, not sure about JIS. The conversion factor is the same as that between meters and inches i.e. if roughness is given as 3.2 micrometers, you multiply this by 39.37 to obtain microinches (= 125)

RE: Surface Roughness Standards

yates,
This may be true only for Ra parameter(even though I am not 100% sure). As for Rz or any other parameters you may discover essential differences in ISO and DIN (maybe ANSI) standards. As far as I remember DIN has changed its definition for Rz parameter, so you may find old Rz and new Rz for DIN.

Mitutoyo Profilometer operating manual has these detials.Electropolishing workshops should have these manuals. Just for a trial.

SURFACE TEXTURE (FINISH)
Surface texture Ra is a measurement of the average distance between the median line of the surface profile and its peaks and troughs

The relevant English standard is BS1134- Assessment of surface texture. (measurement units mm (micro.m))
ANSI B46.1 is used in USA (measurement units minch(micro.inch) )

The ISO standard is DIN ISO 1302 which uses N numbers .

Rules of Thumb for surface finish
•Rough turned with visible toolmarks N10 (12.5mm (micro.m))
•Smooth machined surface....N8(3.2mm (micro.m))
•Static mating surfaces (or datums).... N7(1.6mm(micro.m))
•Bearing Surfaces.... N6(0.8mm (micro.m))
•Fine lapped surfaces.... N1(0.025mm (micro.m))
