SS strip with high hardness

SS strip with high hardness

SS strip with high hardness

(OP)
I'm looking for a stainless steel strip material with a hardness greater than 550HV.  It is for a blade like component that cleans sand out between the disks of a disk stack.  The current blades are 0.012" thick and are made of a spring steel of about 540 HV but they are not standing up to the abrasive/corrosive service.  I thought about a 440C but couldn't find this in strip form.  Does anyone know of any stainless steels that can provide the hardness I need but also come in strip form??

RE: SS strip with high hardness

Austenitics at the full hard level of cold work won't get you there. If you can get any martensitic stainless in strip form,it would work better. Get the highest acrbon level you can, and if that doesn't project enough hardness, maybe you could have it carburized. This would have much better wear resistance at the same hardness.

RE: SS strip with high hardness

There are some new case hardening processes for austenitic stainless steel that have high hardness and good corrosion resistance.  Check out http://kolsterising.bodycote.com/

RE: SS strip with high hardness

We use tons of high hardness specialty strip from Sandvik in Sweden. Its called 7C27Mo2 and is comparable to SAE 420 Stainless. (However processing/microstructure/chemistry/properties (oh wait thats the metallurgy of it) is optimized for fatigue strength.)

It's pretty expensive but if you only need a little you might try Sandvik in Benton Harbor MI. Im sure that Sandvik will have an appropriate grade/gague/temper for you.
