Maybe the term globe is used as a verb... indicating flow around a partially unseated disc.
RE: Why is a Globe Valve called a Globe Valve?
The first globe valves were made from cannon balls.
The name is derived from the shape, but the term globe was used to avoid confusing the farmers and retired soldiers.

I am also under the impression that the globular shape of the body is responsible for the name.
I don't know if that is the only reason.
