Fire line design

Fire line design

Fire line design

(OP)
I need to design to a fire line for a residential multiunit complex, what dictates the size of the line and is there any code that will regulate its design. Thanks!

RE: Fire line design

The fire line size is dictated by the local fire demand which is usually determined by the fire dept. that will service the units. Most likely, the residential fire demand will be 500 gpm and the commercial demand will be 1500 gpm. There will also be a minimum line pressure required, usually 20 psi.

In addition, there usually several other rules such as the distance between fire hydrants, maximum length of a dead end street and sometimes a water supply from two sources is required.

Also the fire demand required is in addition to the normal water demand

RE: Fire line design

Where is the fire line at?  If it's in the states then NFPA will govern its design.  Is the line mixed domestic and fire with a split inside the building?  Are there hydrants on any part of the line? sprinklers? Hose demands?  Give us a bit more infor if you have it.

RE: Fire line design

If in Canada, the fire marshall, the building codes, the municipal regulations and most importantly, a qualified engineer.  In most municipalities, you will not be able to get approval for the development without the engineer's seal and approvals from the reglatory authorities.

RE: Fire line design

Size of the line will be a function of the flow characteristics, the peak demand plus fire demand (pumper demand and/or sprinkler) and resulting velocities.
