Simple 50A to 30A outlet conversion !

Simple 50A to 30A outlet conversion !

Simple 50A to 30A outlet conversion !

(OP)
Folks, I'm new to the board..  I am trying to get an electric dryer hooked up (the 30Amp type - 3 prong plug) but have found that my place has the 50Amp type outlet..  It seems easy enough to wire myself, but I just wanted to make sure 'the proper wires go on the proper posts' !  I understand that the 30A outlet has W, X and Y posts..  W=neutral white, X=125V and Y=250V..  I just want to make sure I can figure out which wires are which when I remove the old outlet !  The electrical main will be shut down of course !  Any help appreciated !

RE: Simple 50A to 30A outlet conversion !

Suggestions:
1. Make sure that the power is off (which you are aware of already).
2. Make sure that you have the power distribution system and voltages right. You may need 240 volts only and ground/neutral. Regularly, this is called three-wire single phase voltage system. You may measure 120 VAC between white/gray and the other two conductors and 240 VAC between those two "phase=hot" conductors.
3. Then, when you wire 30A receptacle, the protective device, e.g. two pole circuit breaker or two fuses immediately upstream should not be greater than 30A. Fuses may be time delay type rated 30A. If you have a different voltage system, measure voltages at the 50A receptacle and post them in here.

If you have " a Main & Range " Fusiable Pullout you will have to use fuse reducer 60:30 amp 250 volt.
They can be purchased at electrical supply houses.
