welding two glass lined shells together

(OP)

What is the best way to weld 2-shells together that have been glass lined and are hlw stamped? No weld can get to the inside of the vessel as it will damage the glass lining.  Is it permissable to weld a piece of bar on the outside to join them with a fillet weld on band to shell.

RE: welding two glass lined shells together

I dont know how much pressure you are dealing with but if those vessels are considered pressure vessels forget the idea.  If they are just vessels under hydrostatic pressure from the content you could probably do it legally depending on the state requirements.  In Massachessetts tanks w/ capcity of 10,000 gallons and over containing products other than water have to be inpected yearly and tanks must be build per API, ASME or equivalent codes.

The procedure that you are recommending to weld both tank w/ a strap on the outside would not be allowed if tanks were considered pressure vessels primarily because of the
longitudinal stress creating a moment at the joint and also because of QC issues.
It tanks are atmospheric tanks review API codes.

RE: welding two glass lined shells together

I worked in the glass lined industry and welding on the substrate could cause the glass to fracture... we did weld insulation clips to the substrate with success... but that was not a pressure bearing weld... contact DeDietrich USA in Union, NJ or Pfaudler in Rochester, NY for suggestions

RE: welding two glass lined shells together

typical practice dictates that the vessels be relined
