Electrical Design on Offshore Platforms

(OP)
I am the I&E Engineer for a company that provides skid mounted equipment for the pipeline industry.  Usually all our work is land-based but today I have a new project, a 30" pig receiver, which is going onto an offshore platform.  The project involves solenoids and limit switches for 5 different valves terminating at a j-box on the skid edge. What is the generally accepted way to handle the conduit for an offshore platform application?  What type of conduit and fittings, what type of junction box?  Area classification in Class 1 Div 2., the product is natural gas.

RE: Electrical Design on Offshore Platforms

Hi,

In which the offshore platform is located ? Check whether they use only conduit or tray.

I have used tray's in offshore platforms it's acceptable & in USA conduit is being used.

However, for you info.if you use conduit it shall be suitable for the applicable area classification.I feel the area classification might be: class 1 Div.I Gr.D.Then all conduits & fittings,JB shall be ex-proof.

For conduit fittings you can check the crouse & hinds(US vendor) or "baliga" catalogue.

We can also use Increased safey JB(GRP OR SS) & solenoid valves & Position switch enclosure mostly will be in Ex-proof.

Check the end user requirement & provide accordingly.

Hope this will be helpful to you.

Bye
GB
