What type of packing is used in high temperature applications in the 400 F to  450 F range (204 C to 32.2 C).  Is it Graphite or Tefflon or something else?

Normal operating maximum temperature of Teflon is 260 deg C

     In the case of pump packing and gaskets you have plenty of options.  Synthetic fibers, PTFE (contrary to the previous post, in a filament yarn can be used to about 500 F), Polyamide and Aramid fibers, graphite, and metal based packing are all options.  Of course other service factors will help narrow your search for the best product.  

     What else can you tell us about the application you have in mind?  Or, call the your local packing salesperson.   The major seal manufacturers have lines of packing as well as many smaller local companies.  Call someone from Chesterton, John Crane, Flowserve,  Anchor, Green Tweed, or Garlock.

Teflon is usable at temperatures up to 500°F (260°C), but there is a significant problem with cold flow extrusion, even at lower pressures (<10,000 psi).  A graphite based packing arrangement is a better bet.  More information on your application would be helpful.

Check out rulon on the saint-gobain web site.  For oil service we us graphite and for all other high temp applications we use teflon

For high temperature compressed air in melt-blowing applications, we used graphite packing.

Gravity is a harsh mistress.
