RE: simple question on stainless

One of the 6+ % Mo containing austenitic SS should work fine.  254SMO is one I have used-there are quite a few others.  Do NOT attempt to use 304/316/317, especially if the shaft will be motionless for a few days.

RE: simple question on stainless

Any superaustenitic or superduplex stainless steel, defined as have a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) greater than 40, will do.

  PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N)   (weight percents)

Candidates include the 254SMO that Metalguy recommends, available from Avesta, their 654SMO, which is even higher PREN, AL6XN from Allegheny Ludlum, 2507 duplex, and equivalent alloys from Carpenter, Haynes International, and Special Metals (ex-INCO).

RE: simple question on stainless

TEV,

Do you have something against Sandvik (grade 2507, etc.)?  You mention ALL of the others by name...

RE: simple question on stainless

TVP - No. Sorry, inadvertent deletion.  2507 duplex, 254SMO and 654SMO are all available from Sandvik.  Sandvik has an excellent hardcover book entitled "Sandvik Steel Corrosion Handbook Stainless Steels" (1994) that gives a brief discussion of various types of corrosion, corrosion testing, a table of alloys they manufacture, tables of resistance of the alloys to various corrosive media, among other sections.  I highly recommend this book as a resource for corrosive applications.

RE: simple question on stainless

what is the operating temperature.
