Failure of O Ring in Mechanical Seal

Failure of O Ring in Mechanical Seal

Failure of O Ring in Mechanical Seal

(OP)
We are presently facing problem of Seal leak due to premature failure of O ring.
O Ring is Exposed to Acetone Vapours, We have tried unsuccesfully varoius materials like Viton and PTFE O rings.
KALREZ is suitable as suggested by supplier but it's very costly almost 300 time more.
Is there any Alternative cheaper Material to Kalrez for O Ring

Warm Regards

SM Patil

Have you tried contacting Parker for recommendations?

You can use Ethylene Propylene rubber, EPDM.
It is much cheaper.

Butyl works as well.  If you want to leave the elastomers alone, consider a seal using a PTFE wedge under the dynamic element.

Don’t choose Aflas.  I have nothing in the world against the product.  I suggest it all the time before choosing a more expensive material such as Kalrez or Chemraz.  But I wouldn’t in this case.  Cheap and easy options are Butyl or Ethylene Propylene.  Aflas is a great alternative to a Perfluoroelastomer in Skydrol, as the last person who posted should agree, but not for acetone.

Also, don’t forget to check the temperature of the service against the rated temperatures for the elastomer.  Perhaps the reason Kalrez was suggested was because the service is at a higher temperature.

It is your fanny.  Cover it.
