API 5L X42 Substitute

API 5L X42 Substitute

API 5L X42 Substitute

(OP)
Hello,

I need to find an equivalent barstock to API X42 PSL2

Carbon .22 max
Manganese 1.30 max
Phosphorous .025 max
Sulfur .015 max
Columbian + Vanadium + Titanium .15 max

CE(IIW) .43 max

yield 42 to 72 ksi
tensile 60 to 110 ksi

Any ideas? The closest I can find is 8620H

RE: API 5L X42 Substitute

This looks to be a microalloyed steel, not an alloy steel like SAE 8620H.  Microalloy steels were created by taking standard high Mn 15xx series steel grades, reducing the allowable P & S levels, and adding small additions of Ti, Nb, V, etc.  SAE J1442 and ASTM A 572 both reference these types of steels, although for bars, the S & P levels are specified to higher allowable levels.  The mechanical properties are the highest priority, not the chemical composition, so steel manufacturers have some latitude in which alloying elements to add and what type of hot-rolling practice is needed in order to produce the appropriate grain size, mechanical properties, etc.

RE: API 5L X42 Substitute

While TVP provides good advice, one cautionary note is that API is mentioned - that means corrosion resistance (including sulfide stress cracking, etc.) may be important, and hence chemical composition may be more important than for other applications.

RE: API 5L X42 Substitute

Friend,

API X42 is the line pipe spec. This is basically plain carbon steel. The bar equivalent to this is AISI 1020 or 1025. 8620 is low alloy steel and NOT equivalent to this.
