We currently have an application that requires 'spacers' to heat insulate 2 plates of aluminium. One plate is at 170C, the other at 60C. The spacers are cylindrical in shape and are highly stressed (don't know the exact load as it is a clamping arrangement).
The company doing the design work believe that there is no insulation material available that combines the properties of high insulation, machinability and high dimensional stability / strength under load.
Does anybody know of materials we could look at?

The temperature-differance is small I think, why not use insulating spacers? I have made spacers from a sheet of mica with a hole-punch myself and it worked fine for me with a temparature up to 800C!
Maybe you can give more details, the clamping-load on the spacers, the distance between the plates. Simple RVS has a rather low heat-conduction, so that might help?
