Corrosion of electrical wiring

Corrosion of electrical wiring

Corrosion of electrical wiring

(OP)
I have a current carrying wire with insulation damage and thinning or partial damage to the copper strands and a corrosion product, identified as copper hydroxide deposited around the damage.  If we apply an insulating medium such as lanolin or silicone spray to effectively cover the damaged areas and isolate them from moisture and the atmoshere, is the copper likely to continue corroding accelerated by the presence of the deposit and flowing electricity.  The voltage is small in the order of milivolts.

RE: Corrosion of electrical wiring

Suggestion: This may be more a chemical challenge rather than the electrical engineering one. Please, post it also under chemical engineering. The conductor or cable manufacturer tech support might be contacted.

RE: Corrosion of electrical wiring

To answer your question I have a question:

What is the conductor supported on? OR where is it lying?

It is one of several wires in an automotive harness covered with a convuluted plastic tube. Location is in an accessable part of a vehicle body cavity.

There is the problem of wet thermoplastic insulation and DC potential causing electroendosmosis, {green-goo ooze} but that’s typically associated with higher voltage.
