pro/e locks up

pro/e locks up

pro/e locks up

(OP)
I use Pro/E 2001 and about 3-4 times a day while I am either modeling or assembling Pro/E just locks up, like it is out of memory. I put the arrow over the shortcuts and they disappear. Sometimes if I close out some of the models that I have open Pro/E will start working again, but not usually. I have to restart my computer for Pro/E to work correctly.
Does this happen to anybody else, and does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Thanks, Phil

RE: pro/e locks up

Cuda,

Switch to WIN NT, 2000 or XP.

RE: pro/e locks up

I have the same problem. Not 3-4 fours at day but sometimes. I use w2k with 768Mb ram. When proe goes off I sh#!!@~#@#~@!! and restart it (not windows) and continue. It happens usually when I work in large models or assemblies.

I have been told by other people that either use Pro/E or have been involved with it that this was common. The situation has gotten worse since I loaded 2001. Why did they release the software if this was a known problem?

RE: pro/e locks up

Pro/E is not perfect, but I think is a hardware probelm in most of cases. Many hardware parts of your computer are not supported by PTC. Especially graphic cards and motherbords chipset.

I'm working on a INTEL XEON platform and Pro/E didn't crash for months.

Try to install the lastest build of Pro/E and look for updated drivers for your graphic card.

Thanks for the tip Hora, updating my graphics card makes sense. I will try that first.

OK, enough is enough!!! I have had it with Pro/E locking up.
What graphics card would you suggest for my application?
I believe that this is my problem.

Thanks for the help guys.

RE: pro/e locks up

I second the NVIDIA XGL Series, 700, 900, ... whatever you can afford...

RE: pro/e locks up

I find if I use Pro/E for long periods of time continuously my available memory drops low and I can't do or click anything. If you have a good Graphics Card and Memory, you may want to limit the time you spend in your sessions and save your work before reopening Pro/E.

RE: pro/e locks up

One thing that you may want to consider doing is this:
click start, Run, and type MSCONFIG, and tell the computer to restart in a safe or diagnostic mode. Also click on the startup tab, and deselect any items that startup that arent nessecary; ie AOL, real Player, etc... these things tend to screw PRo E up. Also watch out for Zone Alarm, it tends to crash PRO E

RE: pro/e locks up

We run both Wildcats with 756 Ram & NVIDIA Quadro4 980XGL Pro (warranty them! 3of5 failed in 12mo plus 2 monitors they were feeding) with 1000 Ram.    Our parts and assemblies can not be opened with less.  We have few lockups.  After increasing page file size to match Ram, we have less Pro/E drops.  I also get out of Pro/E at lunch as memory drain is still a problem in 2001.
In the wildfire class, we had more lockups & drops (Pro/E & mouse) then usual.  I had 18 in the two days. They were older NT machines and we should hope that this is not a trend.

RE: pro/e locks up

I'm am an ex PTC application engineer.
In general, I find that newer versions of the software fix problems like this.
Rarely in my experience has hardware caused problems.

What Datecode of ProE 2001 is causing these crashes?
Select menu items: Help, About Pro/ENGINEER
The datecode should be 2002*** or 2003***
The datecode format is : YYYYWWX, where YYYY=year, WW=week (1 to 53), X=?

I have had experiences with crashes/lockup with slightly older datecodes.
In fact, I have had lockup problems with a relatively new datecode 2003120.
I loaded 2003161 and the problem disappeared.
It's very easy to load.
Just point the install program to your current load directory and it does the rest.

If you are on PTC maintenance, you can request a new datecode CD anytime (or download).

RE: pro/e locks up

I believe this function is called Pro/EXIT?  I too have had much experience with this function of Pro.  I changed hardware and the problem went away, but not because of the hardware...
I agree with many of the posts above and I have to say that the datecode and the paging file size were the reasons for keeping my Pro/E models from using the Pro/EXIT function.

Good luck!
