Tunnel/soil interaction

Tunnel/soil interaction

Tunnel/soil interaction

(OP)
I need a way of modeling the tunnel liner/soil interaction in RISA 2D.  I have referenced the Army Corps of Eng. "Tunnels and Shafts in Rock" EM1110-2-2901, May 97, section 9-10 and found several formulas regarding tangential and radial spring stiffness calcs.  I think this is the dreaded, so-called "modulus" of subgrade reaction, however.  Does anyone have any experience/advice in modeling tunnels?  Helpful hints?  Pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks in advance if you do.

RE: Tunnel/soil interaction

wavequest,

I have a very good source for tunnel design, but it can be difficult to obtain:

"Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Manual", Hunt, Roy E., McGraw Hill, 1983: isdn 0-07031309-1

Give this source a try.  I have not used RISA 2D so I can't help you there.

RE: Tunnel/soil interaction

If you estimate your approach is valid enough, then it goes with than the RISA 2D results will be satisfactory for your requirements.

However there is specific 2D and 3D software for buried structures and if available some will do better than the -for this purpose- non targeted RISA 2D.

So I would do some internet searching for available programs.
